Welcome!

Welcome to our course blog for ENG 099, during the Fall II semester.

I'll use this blog as place to post articles and share information. You'll do some of your writing in the comment sections below these post.

Make sure you have a google or other account to leave a comment. If you don't have one, you can set one up here. (Click the blue box that says 'don't have a google account?' on the right hand side.)

We're going to be reading and writing about Brother, I'm Dying, Edwidge Danticat's book about immigration, Haiti, and the story of two brothers.

We'll start with a couple articles by Danticat. This article, "New York Was Our City on the Hill" is about her experience as a young girl whose parents come to the New York to work, where she eventually joins them. You'll notice a footnote at the end that points to the fate of Danticat's uncle, a story that forms the core of Brother.

In this op-ed, "A Very Haitian Story," she outlines her uncle's story and calls for a change in U.S. policy towards Haitians seeking asylum.

For Thursday, January 6th: put your work in the comments and print it out or put it in a format you will be able to use in class.

Group I: In the comments, summarize Danticat's article "New York Was Our City on the Hill." In one paragraph of about one hundred words, describe the most important idea(s) in the article.

Group II: In the comments, list at least 5 vocabulary words or key terms from Danticat's article "New York Was Our City on the Hill." Begin by giving your best sense of the word's meaning from your knowledge and context. Then use a dictionary or other research tools to describe what the word means in the context of the article.

Group III: In the comments, summarize Danticat's article "A Very Haitian Story" In one paragraph of about one hundred words, describe the most important idea(s) in the article.

Group IV: In the comments, list at least 5 vocabulary words or key terms from Danticat's article "A Very Haitian Story." Begin by giving your best sense of the word's meaning from your knowledge and context. Then use a dictionary or other research tools to describe what the word means in the context of the article.

  2. Edwidge Danticat explains how Haiti was and is still affected by what happened on Sunday, Oct.24 between the U.N and the Haitian police. Edwin’s uncle suffered personally from that and decided with his son to flee to the U.S.A .They were able to enter and go back but when he was asked how long he would stay he said he would die if he goes back. Edwidge’s uncle was arrested with his son and died because they took away his medicine. Edwidge’s debate is to grant Haitians asylum just like it is given to Nicaraguans and Hondurans. She does not see that their situation is any worst in fact Haiti is suffering from extreme poverty and in need of many help to better their health, schools and much more.

PS: I looked up why the U.S is not giving asylum to Haiti and I found that unsubstantiated (not supported by evidence) claims are given to creditability because the “asylees” (the people who want asylum) often come from countries with oppressive government or civil strife (fight or disagreement). So not just a political disagreement but a condition that creates fear among all citizens.

Most immigrants always have a reason for their immigration. Edwidge Danticat's parents immigrant to NY because of the political in their home country. Before E.D and her brother came to NY that NY is a place where they can catch their dreams and a place which is like a palace. But the truth is that their parents have to work very hard for their living. For example, her father had worked two jobs with minimum-wage, also her mother have to work hard to support the family even thought she was sick that she still have to work. However, NY is a place where people could catch their dreams but they have to pay for it. "New York Was Our City on the Hill." if you want to climb to the top of hill that you must walk through the passage which is very difficult.

  8. Hi all - Here are some comments on the first set of responses to help you as we move forward and keep working on these skills. Keep your responses coming!

Hind: Good summary in your first paragraph. The last sentence is a little unclear to me: think about how you might rewrite it. The word 'debate' is also unclear - think about what you might use instead.

    Navindra - Great job.

Dan Dan: Good start. Look at word form (the endings) of words like 'immigrant' in the second sentence and see where there might be some missing words. Also get in the habit of not using abbreviations like the author's initials.

Dominica- Good overview. Look out for run-on sentences.

Satish - Be sure to describe what these words mean in the context of the sentences instead of just giving the definitions.

  9. Many immigrants have difficulty when they come to this country. In the article “New York Was Our City on the Hill” Edwidge Danticat says that her parents escaped the cruel government of Haiti and she and her brother stayed in their country with their aunt and Uncle Joseph. Her parents went to immigrate to New York but it was not easy they faced emotion problem because they missed their children but they could not bring their children in short time. Danticat parents were working hard because they had to support two families. While Danticat and her brother were in Haiti they said that New York was our city on the hill, they fantasized that one day they could be in New York to do that they want and buy any things. After 8 years she and her brother came to New York, for years her father had two jobs and her mother also worked for minimum wage and without benefits. Danticat and her brother were not aware of financial situation of their family that her parents had to support four children and without health insurance. It was sad for them because her brother and her mother were sick but her father had to pay of him own packet. All immigrants want to have American dream in this case Danticat family bought their own house but it brought problem because they had to pay mortgage it was not easy for her father, he has to work during day at night to make the payment. Immigrants want that their children can be better of them, Danticat father wanted that she be a doctor but she did not like it but her parents understand it. Danticat parents wanted that their children had financial stable, the way that a person has a good source income is study. And it wanted Danticat parents for them.

  10. Edwidge Dandicat fears that Haiti is still struggling from the horrendous acts on Sunday Oct 24 which still affects Haiti till this day. All because of the U.N and the Haitian police. From all the Chaos happening around them Edwidges own uncle and son left to the United States. But her 81 year old uncle and son were arrested and her uncle left to die from lack of medicine that was taken away from him. Unfortunately the same help granted to Nicaragua and Honduras is not given to 20,000 Haitians living there and actually denied. Edwidge simply fights to say that their should be equal treatment it seems even thought america will try to help they dont want over population to occur.

  15. Edwidge Danticat mostly talks about how her uncle was a victim of violence in Haiti and died in the article "A Very Haitian Story". She mainly explains how her uncle was used by United Nations peacekeepers on a 3story building roof to fire into the alley below, he was blamed for the deaths of the Haitians killed, so he had to pay for the burial or die, He ended up running away, and got a chance out of Haiti, however since he was wanted killed by people from his country, he and Maxo wanted asylum, got rejected after telling immigration officials that they wasn't wanted in Haiti, while in custody he died, after not haven't taken his prescription medicines which was taken away from him. Which mostly is about discrimination, poverty and mass population.

feel the main idea of this article is the strive for a better future and Immigrants who prioritize a better lifestyle not so much as luxury, but to give their offspring a better chance.
These selfless acts their children appreciate but also make the readers evaluate their current life as well. We know the rights given to us for being born/granted citizenship, but often we forget; it's disappointing.
Edwidge Danticat, main character and author to "New York Was Our City on Hill" tells us the very sacrifices made then are still being made today.
Parents leaving their children behind with a heavy burden to bare; children forcing themselves to accept the situation with hope of their parents last words of seeing them again.
These immigrants would work themselves to the point of exhaustion, but keep moving further ahead taking yet another step for countless hours and usually working minimum wage jobs and still managing a family.
Every step forward is a step further from their undesirable situation until they achieve their goals. New York in comparison to Haiti to these immigrants, was like paradise, better viewed as an opportunity.

Pilar - Good overview and details. Look out for run-on sentences: break up long sentences for clarity.

Michelle - Good work - look at the last sentence and see how you can make it clearer - who is making the argument against asylum, and what is it?

Johanna - Be sure to cite the definition of the words in the context of the article rather than just giving a list.

Gitika - Good job. As well as giving the definition in context, see if you can explain what it refers to in the article.

Jennie - Good start - think about how your summary might include the overall *idea* of the article as well as these details.

Rully - Good start - work on giving the *argument* as well as the events. Also look at sentence structure - look at both fragments and run-ons.

Elaine - Work on thinking about language that's about *argument* rather than a *moral.*

Gabriel - Good application of ideas to the article.

    A Very Haitian Story
On Oct 24 the United Nations troops and Haitian police a military operation in Bel-Air. One of the goals is to oust armed gangs in which are still loyal to Haiti’s deposed President Jean-Bertrand Ariside. During the clash the United Nations peacekeepers used the roof of a three-story building that was housing a church and school that was run by her 81 year old uncle the Rev. Joseph N. Dantica and his Maxo to a fire alley. The official counts relatively few casualties for the day although he won’t ever be counted as part of the official death toll. The uncle was a victim. Not just of the violence in Haiti also having the prejudice of the American immigration officials. Before the uncle lost his life in a series of catastrophic events events that unraveled from the moment the military forces crossed his threshold someone said the other side of the story. When the international and Haitian forces left Bel-Air. Gang members when to my uncle’s home and told him that 15 of his friends were killed and told him he had to pay for their burials or die. Since he lived in Bel Air more than 50 years knows who some of young men were since they were boys so they let him have a few minutes to make a phone call. So he grad important papers and throw them to a nearby house. The uncle hid under a neighbor’s bed for three days in which the gang members searched for him. The gang members ransacked his home and also set the school on fire. The uncle and Maxo traveled to the United State. The uncle had multiple entry visas, just as he had so many times before more than 30 years. This time when the immigigration officials at the Miami International Airport asked the uncle how long will he be staying. He explained that he would be killed if he returned to Haiti and he asked for asylum for him and his son. So he got arrested and was taken Krome Detention center. The uncle told his lawyer three days later he brought medicine with him from Haiti a combination of herbal and prescription medicines for an inflamed prostate and blood pressure. In which was taken away from him. Twenty-four hours later still in custody died in a nearby hospital. Even with extreme circumstances the uncle case is not unusual in terms of his tragic. The confrontation with Haiti’s current political turmoil and homeland security department dismissive treatment of Haitian asylum seekers. When the uncle left Port-au-Prince he joined a long list of desperate that ; were plagued not only by gang warfare, rebel attacks and ecological disasters.

  26. Deposed infers that,Jean-Bertrand Aristode, was once president of haiti, and now almost completely disregarded in the Haitian government, except for a few rebels and misfits in the society.
The second paragraph reads that the "prejudice of American officials" and "A series of catostrophic events unraveled" from the moment, military forces, forced themselves onto his threshold. The few lines in which i have written above this, has great significance to that title that, Edwidge Danticat, wrote for her article, that is "A Very Hatian Story". In the second paragraph of the article, I strongly observe that she wrote a solid introduction with powerful verbs and definitions, to make clear to readers, on how real the expressive relationship is between Haiti and United States Of America. "A series of catostrophic events that unraveled" indicates that there was a sense of confusion and uncertainty among the people who participated in the eveny."The moment the military forces crossed his threshold" proceeds to involve on how something so moveing, something changeing came to thrust and force itself to her uncles life, like a blade through the heart.
The Hatian terrorist, with thier violent intentions, bombarded her uncles home with mailice and violent intentions. The third paragraph explains that the many of the people seeking a sort of justice, were "young men and boys". This has a great deal to do, with her uncle and the youth that he had seen for many decade. There is an urgent need of understanding and maturity for these violent men, who try to bring about thier own justice, with inexperience and dissapointment. To be continued.

On the first chapter of “Brother I'm Dying” by Edwidge Dandicat, the author introduces the situation that leaded her to realize that she was pregnant on the exact same day that her father was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. She came from Miami to New York to meet with his father and family. After the diagnosis, the brother Bob asked if he had enjoyed his life? He thanks everyone for haven't ashamed him and looking back realized that he had enjoyed his life.

  33. Correlation is presented between the hesitation of the United States government, and the struggle to free Haiti from the hands of Haitian terrorist groups. The fifth paragraph, expands clearly on how Jean-Bertrand Aristode wanted a sense of philanthropic supervision from someone. He was very ill with hope of not returning to Haiti for the great value of his life. The higher authority,on american soil chose to take away his benefits(not as a citizen of the United State, but as a humanbieng). This is not a question of citizenship or laws; it is a great examination of how an authority can treat another persons uncle to only- express, a very shallow meaning of power amongst the common working class people. The medicine this man needed was forced away from him, with very little attempt to examine the meaning of this persons involvement in the nation. He was placed in a hospital to only die of stress and the pain of not recieving proper medication.

People from other nations, seeking any measure of secuity, should be put in national detention like wild beasts. It frustrates me to read a well written work that examines how vulnrable and weak homeland security can in our country. How do we participate to measure our own protection, when the vital needs of people are not taken seriusly. Like in the past years in the United States; We need to observe as to why foreign nations have certain initiatives toward other nations and us.seeing the smaller steps of assuring the wellfare of the common people who visit this nation. To dispose of people because they are not productive, is a heartless form of beuratcasy that must be challanged. Humanity is not best expressed by how many people I chose to carry. Humanity is best expressed by how many people chose to carry me, with all my imperfections and with pure pius mercy.

The work written above has some elements that are based on the article "A True Haitian Story" written by Edwidge Danticat. None of the characters written in this page are mine, and were created by the original author.

  36. The work written above has some elements that are based on the article "A True Haitian Story" written by Edwidge Danticat. None of the characters written in this page are mine, and were created by the original author.
Correlation is presented between the hesitation of the United States government, and the struggle to free Haiti from the hands of Haitian terrorist groups. The fifth paragraph expands clearly on how Jean-Bertrand Aristode wanted a sense of philanthropic supervision from someone. He was very ill with hope of not returning to Haiti for the great value of his life. The higher authority, on American soil chose to take away his benefits (not as a citizen of the United State, but as a human being). This is not a question of citizenship or laws; it is a great examination of how an authority can threat another person’s uncle to only- express, a very shallow meaning of power amongst the common working class people. The medicine this man needed was forced away from him, with very little attempt to examine the meaning of this persons involvement in the nation. He was placed in a hospital to only die of stress and the pain of not receiving proper medication.

People from other nations, seeking any measure of security, should be put in national detention like wild beasts infected with rabies. Many people who do not take seriously the health of this country would strongly agree with the sentence written above. It frustrates me to read a well written work that examines how vulnerable and weak homeland security can be in our country. How do we participate to measure our own protection, when the vital needs of people are not taken seriously? Like in the past years in the United States; we need to observe as to why foreign nations have certain initiatives toward other nations and us. Seeing the smaller steps of assuring the welfare of the common people who visit this nation. To dispose of people because they are not productive is a heartless form of bureaucracy that must be challenged. Humanity is not best expressed by how many people I chose to carry. Humanity is best expressed by how many people chose to carry me, with all my imperfections and with pure pious mercy.

In the article “How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment” Lucille Forer says that an individual birth order play an important role in how child sees himself, how people see him and how he develops some behave toward him. The older child tends to feel more competent and responsible than the younger children. The middle child know that he is able to do things better than other sibling. The younger child thinks that he is less able to do things than others because the older brothers and parents always are around him to help. “When my parents are not around, I have no one to turn to for help. So I’d better learn to take care of myself as much possible”. Having no siblings, the only will be independent, feeling that he has no choice but to be competent.
I can imagine why the older child is encouraged for him parents to be more competent and responsible. I see that it is true because parents always give more responsibility than younger brother. I am old than my sisters, I remember when I had 15 years old my mother went to the someplace and she told us that my second sister and I had to do chores of the house. Then when she returned to the house we must have to finish but it was enough to us when she came to the house my mother was upset because it did not finish; she gave me all the responsibility about it. At the time, I did not understand why my parents persuade me that I had responsibility to do because I am older that my sisters. The article emphasizes that parents expect their oldest child to able more responsible than the younger child.
Many times it influences the younger child life; he thinks of himself that he has not to do many things than others brother. It becomes him lazier and he leaves all the responsibility his parents and the older child. I saw a documentary on TV it said that last born child of a family is usually the most irresponsible. Parents and the older siblings blame because they do every thing him. The article point out that the youngest child is not concerned because there are always other around to take of him. It’s true because this situation happened in my house with my younger sister.
The influence birth order can demonstrate that the older child is more competent and responsible that the younger child. It could be better if parents give their children respective own responsibilities no matter the age.

When it was his turn to see a doctor, the physicians saw mass sitting on top of his larynx. The mass might be a tumor the doctor said, he had to do a biopsy right away. The result shows that he had cancer. He needed a radical laryngectomy but the hospital had not had the treatment. The only option he had to go to New York for the surgery. While racing toward hospital, they performed a hole in his uncle’s to insert a tube there so he could breathe. He lost his voice , he was in New York until he recovered. 39. Hi Larry - You still want to look at the *way* you're introducing the text, which is confusing to your readrs. Look at examples from other students or the samples we looked at in class.

Pilar - Good job with your summary. On the revised practice test, good development as well. Look at your paragraph length - you want them to be roughly equal. Also make it clear in your first paragraph when you quote the sibling as to whether you're quoting the text or imagining what a sibling might think.
