In Class Work for Lab on Wednesday, January 12th; Assignment for Thursday, January 13th

Wednesday Work in Lab

1) In the lab period, keep working on your revision of the practice CATW test that you did in class last week. Type your revision and save it in a word file as you go along. Remember that I don't mark anything so feel free to make as many changes as you think will make your essay stronger. Also feel free to change your argument or examples, but do work with the same reading. Read over your work carefully. When you've completed your revision, post it in the comments here. (Folks who didn't do their practice test last week: take about 90 minutes to complete it and post it here.)

2) When you've posted your revised draft, begin to read the essays of your classmates. Choose at least two essays and respond to them by noting at least one strong point of their essay and at least one thing that could be improved. BE SPECIFIC and use the categories we discussed in yesterday's class.

3) If you complete steps your essay and response, you can use the rest of the lab to work on your next reading and post from Brother, I'm Dying. If not, complete it for Thursday. Here's the assignment (all groups this time): Read the chapter "Gypsy" (pages 112-123). In your post, both summarize and respond to the chapter. Describe its most important ideas and respond with drawing on your own experiences. As a part of your post, talk about the title of the chapter and its significance.

  2. In the article "How your birth order influences your life adjustment" by Lucille Forer she talks about how the order in which your born affect your role in your family.

One example that Forer state in her article is " if you’re the oldest child your should be a role model to your younger siblings and they should be able to come to you for advice." This means that the younger siblings should be able to look to the older brother/sister as a guide through problems that they can ask them when their parents aren’t around. Forer also states that “the parents usually expect their oldest child to be more capable of doing certain things and also more responsible than the younger child”. This means that the older child should be able to do certain tasks that the younger sibling can`t like for example driving to the store to get something or lifting something heavy.

Another example of your birth order affecting the role that you play in your family is when you are the youngest child. In the article Forer states that “the youngest child thinks that he/she can`t do the same thing as the older child can because he is smaller than him or her however, he or she can always look to the older child for support. The younger child usually has less responsibility than the older child because the parents don’t want to put too much pressure on the younger child.

In conclusion the order in which you are born can affect the role you play in your family in many ways either it’s the responcilites that you have or if it’s your ability to perform certain tasks .

  4. In the article "FACEBOOK VOWS TO FIX FLAW IN DATA PRIVACY" Miguel Helft discusses about the personal data and information of the users of Facebook used by different web ads companies and games applications. After getting familiar to this privacy issue Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook chief executive, apologized to the users and said that the privacy settings will be solved.
Privacy policies are becoming popular issues nowadays. Many people signup to different social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. People signup to these websites without knowing the privacy policies and other terms and conditions. They just accept without knowing it and give all of their personal information to the web and then the information is used by different web ads companies and applications.
These popular applications like Farmville pass a piece of data known as user ID to outside companies. User ID allows anyone to lookup all the information and all the data posted on the profile of a user and then it is spread over to different web ads companies and they can use any information for any purpose of use, like to make an ad.
I recommend people not to use these type of applications that takes a person’s personal information. As Miguel Helft said “The popular game Farmville, had improperly shared indentifying information about users and in some cases their friends with advertisers and Web tracking companies.” People should read all the terms and conditions before signing up to a social networking website, so that they can know what type of information they should not give on the web.

I the middle son in the family have very little responsibility role over me. However, my oldest brother has the most responsibility because he knows his role in the family. In the article “How Your Birth Order Influence Your Life Adjustment” by Lucille forer talks about the responsibility role in the family. The oldest feels that he has the up most responsibility of all because the parents expect him to take charge. The middle is kind of similar to the youngest but he expects help from the parents or the oldest only he needs it. And the youngest child is pretty much live very dependable to who is older than him in the family. I totally agree to Lucile forer statements, the balance of responsibility in the family is uneven.
The parents always have the highest expectation toward the oldest. Not only that, but the oldest knows his role in the family. This relate to the second paragraph “Parents usually expect their oldest child to be more capable and more responsible than the younger children. The oldest child comes to think about himself in the same way.” by Lucille Forer . A good example, when I was a little kid, one day I was walking home from middle school. I encountered bullies and got beat up for their entertainment. From that day on, my oldest brother always walked me home from school until I got to high school without get my parents involve.
Even though the oldest takes most of the responsibility however the middle kind of act like a second in commanding role. According to the third paragraph “ sometimes, though, he must turn to an older sibling or to his parents for help, and so he thinks of himself as being able to obtain help when he needs it” by Lucille Forer, the middle is pretty much capable taking care of himself. This can be relate to middle class people, unlike the lower class people(youngest), most of them have a house of their owns. They don’t live on rent and mortgage. They have a very strong financial foundation; a high salary and a house.
Being the youngest and the middle in the family is an easy role to plays, however being the oldest is tough because most the responsibility is on him. It seems to be unfair for the oldest but that what oldest gets when he came out to the world before the middle or the youngest. Life is not fair. If it is, there would be called life.

  7. The essay by Lucille Forer in “How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment”, describes the importance of the position in a family. Forer believes a parent usually expects their child to be capable of something more then the other, because of birth order. I think age and birth order doesn’t necessarily help in the development of a child. Self-concept is more from a environmental and experience point of view, then what a parent’s expectations.
I’m the oldest in a family of five and this theory didn’t apply to me. My younger brother is more independent then me. If it was a gender difference then I would agree, since the attitude of the parent and the environment is different for her. The development of the child also changes because of the different treatments from the parent for example; the favorite child.
An only child tends to rely on their parents to much. Were there’s no competition, it becomes harder for that child to develop because he has both of his parents attention. Where Forer believes that an only child tends to rely on himself faster.
A parents expecting something from a child creates disappointments, which led’s into teaching. A child learns from his mistakes, from his experience.

How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment
Woman's birth order does not really matter in some ways. The article" How your Birth Influence Your Life Adjustment" by Lucille Forer trying to convince people that each child have a specific role to be played in their family depending in their age. Many people think the oldest child should be the person in charge of the family. Also the middle child sometime think about himself the same way as the older child because he think he can be in charge of the younger child, and get help from the family when he needs it. Then the youngest child place himself as the one who have less possibility to do many things but he is not too worried because he expect help from the others. However, the only child think differently in order to take care of himself when he does not have any one to turn to.

I think birth order is not always necessary. I have seen oldest, middle or even then youngest child in charge of a family, for example my grandparents family.

  9. As a consumer I always thought of myself as a well educated buyer often putting time and research into what I’m interested in buying, but in Mary Elizabeth Williams article “How cheap ruining our lives” I’m given a new prospective in the way I look at a bargain. In Williams’s article we are told that when we buy products at a discount, we often give up the quality of the product an exchange for a cheaper price. Products that come at a discount may have both good and bad associated with it, but in the end it’s a decision for the consumer to decide whether to choose a lower price or higher price with better quality.

It is safe to assume that consumers have developed a distinct taste for discounts, often avoiding higher prices in search for lower ones. Williams tells us “Our collective mania for low, low prices has been frothing for years now, fueled by morally dubious manufacturing practices, aggressive marketing and a crap economy.” There has been a growing trend for individuals to seek out lower prices, which has been influenced by economic conditions, heavy advertising and unethical manufacturing practices. Like all bargains there’s always a catch, I often find myself playing the role of the pessimist and the optimist when searching for a bargain. Roaming the internet I found discount phones at T-Mobile’s website and thought to myself, there had to be something wrong with the phones so I simply over looked the deal.

Although many of us may come across bargains every day of our lives, it’s important to consider what we are sacrificing in order to make that bargain possible.

  10. On the chapter “Gypsy” by Edwidge Dandicat, it relates how they reunite two brothers to their Haitian brother and sister, Bob and Edwidge. The precarious situation does not allow the father to choose another better job, than driving a cab anywhere is needed. After many years apart, the little girl receives a gift that always though was useful for her uncle business and church work; a type writer. Now that she is apart she thinks that she may use it to write back and forth with his uncle Joseph that was in Haiti. The four brothers make a special bond, even though they did not grow up together or weren't sure about each other existence.
The title suggests what the context is going to be about moving from one place to other. For my point of view, the girl and the boy that were left behind and now are reunite to the family and join the rest of the members on the United States are traveling like gypsy’s trying luck and hoping that things will get better. Also the vehicle that was the only income to the family is like a gypsy car, commuting different people everyday.
When it comes about family, I believe that there is instinct between siblings. The love that one can feel for a family member is an instant reaction. On my own experience, I met my step older sister when I was six, and it was beautiful to know another new member of my family.

  11. Facebook has become one of the most popular sites to share and communicate via web which I Personally use on a daily basis. But what most people don’t realize and understand is the risk behind providing personal information.” Face book vows to fix flaws in data privacy” by Miguel Helft proves to us that Face book does realize that some information leaks to advertisers and web tracking companies. Although technology experts did not agree on the issue, the company’s chief executive apologizes, and promises to fix the problem. Unless Face book finds a solution to its problem, a lot of people will stop trusting Facebook.

The main idea of Face book is to stay connected. Whether it’s with family and friends, or meeting new People. But with all the information provided to it, as it says in the article “several popular applica-tions were passing a piece of data known as a user ID” that has made it possible for advertisers to get all the information they need to target you and what it is you’re interested in. For example on my web page, the advertisements are very tempting. Since I look up a lot of sales and deals, all I see is how cheap this purse is and how easy it is to get a credit from this store. It makes it hard for me or the viewer not to fall in to their trap. That will more likely to suck me into their website; which will lead me to buying things, spending money that I necessarily didn’t intend to spend. Just because they had a way to know what I’m interested in trough my personal information.

Facebook also acknowledges that some applications including Farmville have improperly shared identifying information about its users as Miguel states in the article. Most Face book users play Farmville, to the point that it became an obsessive game. Most of my friends have become professional farmers, so to say. They became so addicted to it to the point that one of my friends called me at ten at night begging me to feed her cow so she won’t die because she didn’t have access to the internet at work. Whit an applications that thousands of people use everyday that’s leaking information is like knocking on the door of advertisers. They don’t have to work hard to get to you. A simple click will do their job while most people don’t know it.

Unless Facebook finds a solution to their privacy issues, many people will be reluctant on using it. At a time where competing companies are thriving error ……

  15. Nazim - Good clear writing and summary of the article - now be sure to include *your response*. What do you think of the idea and why?

Murad - Good clear writing. You'd want to pick up on the point you make about Zuckerberg in the first paragraph - he says the problem has been solved, but you say it's still a problem. How do you put these two pieces together?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tuan - Good use of specifics from both the text and your experience. But your last paragraph becomes much more confusion. What's the connection you're making between birth order and social class? Also look at sentence structure throughout - be sure different parts of the idea are linked.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hussain - Good clear writing. But be sure to spend more time summarizing the article and its evidence before you say why you disagree.

Jennie - A good start - think about how you would complete your essay by giving examples and evidence to support your point of view.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gabriel - Very strong clear writing and good development, but somewhat short and incomplete. Think about how to pick up on the last sentence of your second to last paragraph and develop further with different examples or evidence, responding to different parts of the original text.

  19. PrOfessor.. in the first paragraph i have written " In the article "FACEBOOK VOWS TO FIX FLAW IN DATA PRIVACY" Miguel Helft discusses about the personal data and information of the users of Facebook used by different web ads companies and games applications. After getting familiar to this privacy issue Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook chief executive, apologized to the users and said that the privacy settings will be solved. "

  20. Johanna - Good overview and response - the sentence that introduces the car is a little unclear - think about how you'd rework it and transition from the last paragraph.

Hind - Good development of ideas and use of details. Look out for fragments - see if you can find the two you have and rework. Also, after the first mention, refer to the author by his or her last name.

Navindra: Good overview. As we talked about on class on Thursday, work on summarizing idea as well as the facts, and use this as you move towards a response.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Satish - Good start. Work on developing ideas more fully. Also pay attention to fragments, and look up the correct use of their vs. there.

Hind - Good start - think about how you'd here move from summary to your response.

If you have time and would like to read and present the article about the earthquake to class to aid our discussion, let me know.

  22. Hi Murad - Right, that's a good first paragraph. My question is - Zuckerberg says the problem has been fixed, but your essay says it's still a problem. So you'd want to talk more in the rest of your essay about those two sides of the argument and how you see them fitting together.

It's a big family with seven children however the person on charge is the fourth child. He is the one who have to give money when they needs. He is responsible Of everything. It is a big responsibility when we in charge of something and we have to be carefully and reasonable in order to take good care of.

  24. Jennie - Some good additions, but you'd still want to further develop your ideas. And think about the way you start your second paragraph: "I think birth order is not always necessary." What do you mean? Does the sentence mean what you want it to?

  26. Undocumented Students
Illegal immigrants, undocumented people, undocumented students--- all these people took a risk hoping their lives would be better if they go to a place of a million opportunities. It is really hard to stop the immigration problem. Although everybody has the right to live the way they want to live their lives, there will always be rules and laws to follow.
As what I’ve read, the dedication of Leslie and her colleagues to excel in their education in spite of living a life of fear is really outstanding. Everybody wants to be accepted. Everybody wants to be free to do what they want but I also believe that a wrong action will always be reciprocated with another wrong action. If they came in to the USA illegally they should also expect that things will not be as smooth sailing and they can never be hiding forever.
The DREAM act is a good sign that people really do care and people just want everybody to have a place in this country. Whether it will be approved or not, the dedication of people like Leslie will pay off one day in this generation or the next.
